How to get Netflix USA in Canada A Comprehensive Guide

First things first, if you don’t already have Netflix I would highly recommend that you go about getting it. It’s free for the first month and only $7.99 for each month thereafter. So first step would be to make yourself a Netflix account here http://www.netflix.com

Once you have gone about making yourself a Netflix account, you will notice that there is a wide variety of titles currently over 7000 and a ton of different categories, but you will also notice that there isn’t a lot of recent content added, whereas on Netflix USA there are currently 10473 titles, almost double the amount that we are Canadians are able to get with new content being added all the time.

To get a Netflix USA account, you have to purchase a subscription to a DNS service; I would highly recommend UnoDns which can be found here http://www.unotelly.com/unodns/
There is a free trial available for 8 days, after your 8 day trial you have to pay 4.99, which brings your total monthly bill for Netflix to 12.93 a month, this is far cheaper than any cable or satellite provider and on top of that, you don’t have to deal with commercials.

If you want to use Netflix on one of your gaming systems, please use the following setup guide.

For Wii:
– Make sure your Wii is connected to the internet
– Select Wii options
– Select wii settings
– Click the right arrow once to view the internet option, click internet
– Go to connection settings
-Select the connection profile you are currently using
– Select change settings
-Select auto-obtain DNS settings, you will need to click the arrow three times until you see auto-obtain DNS setting
-Select No, then advanced settings
-Now click on primary DNS and Secondary DNS fields and type in your ISP DNS server Ip address which will have been obtained from your DNS service
-select confirm
-Click on save
-Click on OK to start the connection test
-Perform a Wii system update
-When you have done all of this, now try to go to Netflix, you will notice that you have far more titles then you previously had on your Canadian account.

For Ps3:
It’s much easier, to go Settings->Network Settings->Internet Connection Settings. Configure it manually, and when it asks for DNS servers, use the DNS codes provided by the DNS service and save. When you open Netflix, it will now be USA.

I would not recommend doing this with an Xbox 360, as they require you to use your Xbox live account.

  1. We don’t have a gaming system so we hook our laptop up to the tv, if you do that, or want to watch ‘merican Netflix on you computer follow these simple steps. Download Mozilla (if you don’t already have it) Google ‘Media Hint’ Download Media Hint. After you have successfully installed Media Hint every time you log onto Netflix on Mozilla it will be the American one. We use Chrome for Canadian Netflix.

  2. Just wondering, We have Net flix through our x-box 360. You have instructions on how to get net flix US through the Wii and ps3. Does that mean that you can’t get it with an x-box? and if you can, how do I do that?

  5. Follow the instructions for your computer and watch it from there. That’s what I did to test it, and I still have it on my computer. But you do need a paid subscription for Netflix. I think they still offer 30 days free.

How will I be able to install it?
    Thank you!!!

  7. That’s good and all that it works. I used unblock us before, but why do the Canadians have to pay more for the same shows as the Americans?

  10. All good and well…but watch your bandwidth with cable (unless you pay the big, big bucks for unlimited) or it will cost you big in the end if you go over your monthly allowance.

  11. My Tv has built in wifi and connects directly to Netflix. How do I use unotelly and Netflix USA on the TV?

  12. Does anyone know what happens to other devices accessing Canadian Netflix? I have a PS3 in the living room and a Wireless BlueRay player in one of the bedrooms. Will the BlueRay player still be able to access Canadian Netflix?
    Thanks…

  13. It’s not too hard. Sign up to Unotelly ( link is in post) and they have instructions with pictures on how to put it on your apple tv. There is a 7 day free trail:) Hope this helps.

  14. We have cable through Rogers as well as internet. I just purchased an AppleTV box and signed uo for netflix Canada. I now want to add Netflix US.

  15. Hi Bettie

I just set this up this week after reading this post. I already had a Netflix account. After I setup with Unotelly the Netflix servers thought my computer was from the US and started streaming the US website material. My account for billing is Canadian however. It’s a brilliant workaround and I’ve been telling all my friends about it.

  16. Yes betty, a free DNS server will work, HOWEVER that being said you will experience alot of lag and it does not run smoothly, lots of buffering ect.. Where as with the company that I use (UNOTELLY) I honestly can’t tell a difference at all in the speed compared to regular Netflix.

  17. I had canadian Netflix for a while but just didnt see a lot there so i cancelled. I have a free DNS program on my computer so that I can watch other online shows. I am assuming this would work the same as a paid dns service for netflix. I might have to resubscribe :)

  18. unblockus is also a good dns provider and also offers a free trial. I highly recommend doing this! So much more content on US Netflix!

  19. No, you need to have your device: laptop, ps3, wii, set up as an american dns, and netflix Canada will then think your in the USA on vacation and will give you the american programing.
