In fact, we’re investing more than $1 billion in climate action initiatives. At the same time, we’re introducing new personal and business tax reductions. The changes in Balanced Budget 2008 will give British Columbians, by 2009, the lowest personal taxes in Canada on incomes up to $111,000. We’re also encouraging innovation and conservation by introducing North America’s first revenue-neutral carbon tax. And starting in late June 2008, British Columbians are eligible to receive a Climate Action Dividend of $100. It's just one of the way we're helping people take action on climate change. How will you spend your $100? Whether you choose to buy energy-efficient light bulbs, shop locally for produce, or purchase eco-friendly upgrades in your home, your decisions can make a big difference. Who will receive a Climate Action Dividend? The Climate Action Dividend is available to every adult and child who was a resident of British Columbia on December 31, 2007. This includes $100 to parents for each child who was under 18 years of age at the end of 2007. For Parents You will automatically receive payment for your children, who are under the age of 18 as of December 31, 2007, if you have filed your 2006 or 2007 income tax return and your children are registered for the Canada Child Tax Benefit with the Canada Revenue Agency. Parents are entitled to receive $100 dividend for each child, regardless of their income or the amount (if any) of Canada Child Tax Benefit they receive. If your child is not registered for the Canada Child Tax Benefit, visit the Canada Revenue Agency website at www.cra-arc.gc.ca/benefits or contact them directly at 1-800-387-1193 for more information to ensure you receive your payment automatically. For those individuals who do not register their children for the Canada Child Tax Benefit, there is also an option for the parent or primary caregiver to apply for the $100 payment per child through the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue. How do you get the Climate Action Dividend? Starting in late June 2008, the dividend will be mailed automatically to every eligible adult who has filed either a 2006 or 2007 personal income tax return for British Columbia. Parents whose children are registered for the Canada Child Tax Benefit will also receive a $100 payment for each child. Once the tax return is assessed, the dividend will be mailed automatically to the mailing address provided on the tax return. Even if you or your spouse have little or no income to declare, the sooner each of you file your individual tax returns, the sooner you will each receive your one-time $100 dividend. If you have already filed a 2006 or 2007 BC tax return, but are moving, or have recently moved, it only takes a few moments to change your address. While the easiest and quickest way to receive the dividend payment is to file a 2006 or 2007 BC income tax return, there is also an option to file an application through the Ministry of Small Business and Revenue.
