Just got this in an e-mail-cat diagnosed with H1N1!

I just received a press release from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) confirming the first reported case of the H1N1 flu virus in pets and I wanted you to know about it immediately.

The AVMA just released the following information:

"A 13-year-old cat in Iowa developed signs of a respiratory infection after several people in the household were ill. Preliminary testing was positive for 2009 H1N1 on October 29, and the results were confirmed on November 2. This is the first report of a cat infected with H1N1. The cat has recovered from its illness.

To date, this is the first cat confirmed infected with the 2009 H1N1 virus."

Here are some tips to help keep you and your pet healthy:

If you are sick, see your doctor.

If your pet is showing a problem, see your veterinarian.
It is a good idea to wash your hands before and after handling your pets. This is just good common sense.
Do not expose your pets to other sick pets.
Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, and toss your soiled tissues in a covered waste bin.
Good preventative measures can help keep you and your pets healthy. That's good advice any time of year, but especially during flu season

it's pretty sad, I'm glad the cat recovered, I heard that 2 ferrets died from H1N1

I try to use hand sanitizer before and after petting my cat

the 3 ferrets are from NB. They did not die tho'....thank goodness. I got a call from the dr today myself. I have H1N1. In quarantine for the next week. Feels like when I was a kid and got grounded! Oh well I would not want to spread it. I sure would not wish my last few days on anyone.

OMG Naomi, I hope you are ok!! Get better soon. Liljj has had been sick too-but think just the flu and hubby has it now too. It is everywhere. I just heard today that a friend of mine's daughter had H1N1 too- she ended up with Pneumonia and was very very sick (she is only 19 ,years old) This really scares me-GET WELL SOON!! HUGS

Yes, it is horrible. My daughter went to the dr. yesterday and they think she has it as well. She is 18. The muscle aches and the coughing are horrendous! The problem is that we have to wait 2 weeks to find out if it really is H1N1. Thats how back logged they are.
