| Little Beaver Join Date: Apr 2008 Location: Alberta, Canada | I am just new here, so I hope this hasn't been discussed already... I appologize in advance if it has! What do you think of the new Checkerless Checkstands? Do you use them? Personally I don't like them as they take jobs from people, but like them or not, they are here to stay. I don't use them if at all possible. ![]() ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vote for my Jones Soda Label! Please and Thank You! http://www.jonessoda.com/gallery/view.php?ID=0000943298 |

What's next? Like the commercial..perform your own surgery? Man what a rant I'm on this morning..move over Rick Mercer! (his job gone?) LOL

It's not that HARD either. My local superstore makes you bag the items because they pass on the savings from not paying someone to bag to you. I don't mind some extra exercise if i save a bit of money. Kids can do alot better than a checkout, i've never seen anyone that looked over 25 working at a supermarket checkout. It's not really a place where you pay for premium service, anyway. |

| Head Cheif ![]() Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Northern Alberta | I have used them when in a hurry, I live in a smaller center, so I don't see them here, but I have used the walmart one before. I am not sure what I think of it. Yes I suppose there are jobs lost. Tellers at banks, there isn't a huge need as they only need a few now, and not 10 at the counter, But it is every business's best interests to cut costs, and unfortunately employees are a huge cost, so the fewer you have the more your net goes up. When I owned my gas station, I had full service, and let me tell you, if It didn't cost what it would of to put in "self serve" I would of done it in a heart beat. Not only the wages, but the more employees you have in this situation the more "loss you have" example "theft, carelessness, etc." Tellers at banks is a bit different. Did you know in a current year, The average teller looses only $20.00 per year. I thought that was pretty decent. Geez I usually lost that a couple times a week with gas personal |

Also being in an area taking alot of hits in the job market in the last few years the jobs also go a long way helping families. The average wage in this area is low. I understand the bottom line is profit but I know ( I was one) people holding down 2 or 3 of these part time positions. At one point I had 4 part time jobs. they are also a great starting point for experience, teaching work ethics, and sometimes encouraging youth to continue their education once they see what they don't want to do with their lives.

It IS a hard job also and many of the cashiers pay for it with tendonitis, carpal tunnel, bad backs, bad shoulders and necks. If you have ever worked at this type of job for any length of time (I am talking years), you will know just how difficult it it. | |

| Diva Beaver | The local superstore has them. I have only used them when I have one or two items and the lines for the cashiers were long. I find them a pain with a lot of groceries, and you can't use coupons in them. I also want to use my reusable bags and get the extra points. |
