Angry Horrible News Today

My hubby works for GM here in Oshawa and just got back to work after a layoff since Jan. Now they are going to close the truck plant. He works in the car plant but some people in the truck plant have nor seniority. So he may get laidoff or enough people may retire or take the buy out. He has worked there for 19 yrs. Just goes to show time is not job security.

im sorry to hear that Sherbear.. there is nothing more stressful than having to stick around waiting to see if you have a job or not.. and 19 years is an long time and that should count for something in my opinion.. I hope things will work out for you guys

good luck to you Sherbear and your hubby. I will pray for you folks. I saw the news on TV. It is always sad to hear of layoffs. We here had 3 mills close recently and it also causes a big difference in spin-off jobs.

yes so do I, there was a meeting on fri in detroit with the big wigs of GM and they flat right said we are not giving you back your truck plant. In the agreement they stated that it would be used for a new set of cars coming out and now they are closing it. They have broken the agreement and I think now things are in with the lawyers. We have been protesting at the gm headquarters and not allowing the blue coller staff into work. They are not happy , but we are doing it calmly not breaking the law just lots of us. Thanks for all the support guys. Its much appreciated.

I'd just like to point out, for those who don't know.. not only are there all the people who work for GM losing their jobs but there are over 100 other shops who make parts for GM who are either going to have to close or have major layoffs.. here in St Thomas alone there are at least 2 plants that strictly make parts for the GM truck plant .. this is a huge hit to the Canadian economy, and Ontario alone has over 200,000 people in the manufacturing industry who have either lost their jobs due to closures or are on layoff

You are right Destiny...the spin off jobs are also a major blow to an area's economy.

It is a snowball effect. The manufacturing jobs are dissapearing fast. I am just wondering how much money the government is going to save when all of us loosing our jobs have to go on welfare just to make ends meet. My husband is 41 it is going to be hard for him to get a job. But we have to feed our families some way.
