CAMPING! woot my family always goes camping every summer i love it so much now i have a dog to come with us shes my baby girl hehe her name is kelsey and shes a miniature dachund i cant wait to take her camping with the family and go to the dog beach
No real plans yet. I have tickets to go the the Shaw Festival (anytime between now and October) and Hubby got us ticket to the Cirque Du Soleil in August for our Anniversary. I have always wanted to go to the Cirque. I usually take a weeks holidays at the end of August, just before school is back in. We like to do day trips like the Toronto Zoo, The African Lion Safari, Niagara Falls, the Rom Musium, or just down to the beach at Port Dover. We play it one day at a time, as long as I am not at work and get to visit some real Cheetahs then I am happy.
I was hoping to go to the okanagan to visit my brother, then do some sight seeing up there. But now Im not sure we will be able to afford it (gas) so maybe just camping. My son has not been camping yet.
No big plans here, but thought maybe if anyone is going to be sending their child to a summer camp I have some suggestions to ask the camp staff. It is funny, we trust summer camps, but WHY ?? Anyhow, here we go
Have criminal record checks been done on ALL staff ? (also ask to see them, not to read them, just to make sure they really do have them)
If there is a life guard ask to see their certificate.
Do all staff members have their first aid training and at least 3 with their industrial first aid. Is there a nurse on duty, again ask to see credentials, and where is the nearest hospital.
If horses are involved, ask to see their credentials. Horse teaching certificates etc. Walk through the barns, if they are dirty (with in reason, it is a barn after all) but if it is really bad, walk away ! Look at horses hooves, if they are cracked, or long, they are not being looked after well enough (not for my liking anyhow) Check out the tack room, make sure all saddles have stirrups, and horns. Check bridles, make sure they have chin straps. Ask the ages of staff members with horses.
What is the staff to camper ratio. 6 to 1 is a good ratio. Or less.
Walk through the cabins. Dirt says a LOT.
Are staff near by at night ? Sleep in the same building or room ? You don't want your child to be unsupervised ever.
boys and girls kept separate ?
Is there a written itinerary ? if not, walk away. It indicates they let the kids do what they want when they want, and we as parents want structure.
Check kitchen area, make sure there is a recent health check done. Ask to see certificates for the kitchen staff's "food safe" EVERY kitchen staff member should have one.
Ask if they are accredited with the BCCA (BC camping assoc) if not, WHY ?
I have lots more, but these are a great starting point !
One last thing, just because a camp says they are a "bible" or "religious" camp does not make them safe. Same goes for a "family run business".
Ask a million questions, the more the better, and if they are a reputable camp they will not have a problem giving you answers.
One last thing, go see it in person before registering !!
I think my neice is coming to stay with me for the summer ,,,, which is wonderful if I can keep her occupied LOL she is 14. Other than that I have a colonoscopy I am really looking forward to in june NOT!!! Hopefully the sun will shine all freakin summer.
Going Camping in Port Dover on Friday June 13 for the weekend and some weekend trips to the Toronto Zoo, The African Lion Safari, Niagara Falls (like we do every summer) .. and sending the kids to grandmas house for a few weeks (out of town) in July... I agree Naomi, We went to the east coast last year. Next year we are heading to the west coast. Here in Canada we are so lucky to be blessed with such a beautiful place.
Yes Naomi. We went to NB, NS and PEI it was wonderful. Hopewell rocks was the best part. The weather was cool and rainy so that sucked cause we were tenting but all was great we had a wonderful time. 2010 we will be back.
Does June 1st count as summer?? Sunday (tomorrow) is my son's birthday, so we're going to Storybook Gardens in London Ontario ... I haven't been there since my 2nd grade field trip, over (gulp) 20 years ago ...
