| Baby Beaver Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Charlottetown, PEI | I haven't visited Free Canadian Samples for a little while and thought I'd check it out on a slow Sunday. Imagine my disgust when one of the first posts I saw was the one about a woman with two black eyes. Violence against women is not a joking matter. I am saddened that three moderators commented on this post but did not remove it and warn "Jackie" that this is no more tolerable than if she had made a joke about smacking a black person to teach them their place. All of the moderators should read the information below so that they are aware of Canada's stand on this. NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN December 6 Did you know that December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada? Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women. As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. And finally, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls. |

| Smart Beaver | Before seeing this thread, I received a message from Destiny about the post, and I would like to share with you all some of the message I sent her in response: I see how some people could view this joke as being sexist and offensive, but I think it's a harmless joke. The punch line of the joke is not that the person is a woman, and the joke would serve the same purpose if it was a man. "Being told" is a slang expression, it doesn't mean that the female was told to do something, and I see how people may not have realised this and thus, taken it out of context. For the record, I am a woman and a feminist. I believe the ill treatment of women is something society overlooks in the twenty first century and it's an important issue people need to examine and realise that there's still a gap between ideal gender treatment and reality. Last week, I was just at a December 6 memorial to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the Montreal Massacre and I heard very empowering speeches by women who had been abused in the past. I certainly would not have posted the joke, or found it humourous in any way, if I thought it was about a female being battered. But that's not how I interpreted the joke, and thats why I posted it. So really, I think this is just a misunderstanding and I hope that something like this won't be an issue again. |

| Chief ![]() Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Northern Alberta | A joke is simply a joke, and many jokes are offensive to someone, either a gay person, women, men, there are many insults in many jokes, And without looking at the joke. I will stand behind the mods on the move of the joke. If they found it offensive, or perceived as offensive to someone we will remove it. Please Jackie, continue to post. Its not the first joke that has been removed, and probably won't be the last. Lets all try to get along. Not all our tastes are the same. |
