Mars has come under criticism by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for funding animal tests which the group alleges are inhumane, including a study regarding angiogenesis and spatial memory in which mice were fed catechins, a candy ingredient, compelled to swim in paint, then dissected.[13] Other experiments involved life-threatening cardiac puncture of mice with inadequate anesthesia. PETA alleges that these experiments are not required by law, their only purpose being to promote increased consumption of Mars' products.

Veggies vow to boycott Mars bars

Vegetarians plan to boycott Mars bars after their recipe changed to include animal products.
Other big brands from the same company -including Snickers, Galaxy, Twix, Bounty, Milky Way, Maltesers and Minstrels - are also affected.
From this month, chocolate manufacturer Masterfoods has started using rennet - an enzyme taken from the stomachs of newborn calves - to make whey for its products.
It had previously been relying on a readily available - but more expensive - vegetarian alternative to rennet.

The firm makes three million Mars bars a day in its factory in Slough.
Vegetarian Society spokesman Liz O'Neill said: "People will not like the idea that you cannot make a Mars bar without killing a calf.
"We have had no good, clear answer from Masterfoods why they have to use animal products when all these items were previously produced using vegetarian alternatives.
"But we can no longer describe any of them as suitable for vegetarians."
Any bar with a 'best before' date after October 1 this year is now no longer classed as vegetarian. The firm is offering a refund to anyone who has bought a bar but does not wish to eat it.

In May 2007 Masterfoods announced that Mars Bars, along with many of their other products such as Snickers, Maltesers, Minstrels and Twix would no longer be suitable for vegetarians because of the introduction of rennet, a chemical sourced from calves’ stomachs used in the production of whey.[6] Masterfoods confirmed that many other products such as Easter eggs and ice cream would also be affected.
The decision was condemned by several groups, with the Vegetarian Society stating that "at a time when more and more consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, Masterfoods’ decision to use non-vegetarian whey is a backward step".
However, Masterfoods later abandoned these plans, stating that it became "very clear, very quickly" that it had made a mistake.[7]
