We at Cabaret Foods have been on a quest to discover whether new ways of making chocolate can produce foods and drinks that make you feel better.

And we just may have hit on something important.

We’ve tested a new kind of chocolate on a few dozen people. A substantial percentage reported feeling positive effects.

Now we want to let many more people try this new chocolate and tell us whether it works for them.

We were fascinated by the fact that the ancient Mexicans seemed to value chocolate even more for how it made them feel than for how it tasted. So we started with traditional methods for making liquid chocolate beverages directly from cocoa beans (cacao) and quickly discovered that these drinks had some remarkable effects.

From there, it was a long process of refinement to create the right flavor for today’s tastes and a form for the product that’s convenient and versatile.

So is this a drink?

You can dissolve the solid chocolate in hot water to produce a delicate, clean beverage similar to coffee or tea. Or you can dissolve it in hot milk to make a more familiar kind of hot chocolate.

Or you can just pop a piece in your mouth and suck on it.

Is this a drug?

This new chocolate is a pure and simple food.

We take fine cocoa beans, roast and grind them, and then brew them in water – much like coffee – to extract a wonderful chocolate liquid.

We remove any free fat (cocoa butter) from the liquid, and cook it down with sugar (cane sugar and organic agave syrup) and a touch of vanilla. There are no artificial ingredients and no chemical processes other than simple cooking.

It’s therefore no more of a “drug” than a cup of brewed coffee sweetened with sugar. But its effects are different than coffee.

Does it get you “high”?

Thus far, no one is reporting any kind of real euphoria. The effects, for those who feel them, are much more subtle, and – for most of us -- much more valuable. A pleasant sense of ease or well-being. Maybe a bit more relaxed. Maybe a bit more alert. It seems to depend on the individual.

And please don’t request a sample if you have any trouble with caffeine. Chocolate contains small amounts of caffeine, but significant amounts of natural theobromine, which is related to caffeine. It’s best to play it safe
