I am sitting here watching the show “Toddlers and Tiara’s” on TLC and I have to admit that it is painful to watch. Seeing those little girls with spray-tans, fake hair, fake nails, make-up, etc. The list can go on and on. They don’t even want to see a space in those beautiful little teeth, so we just shove a “flipper” in their mouths.
Being a mom of three girls I am all for promoting self-esteem in young girls and woman but I am wondering if shows like this are doing more harm than good.
I know that much of the show is probably edited to get “ratings” but how many more “Ouches” or “I don’t want to’s” do we has parents really want to hear? To watch those little girls crying and having temper tantrums is more than I can bear. Why put them through this?
Is it worth it? I’m not knocking all beauty pageants, don’t get me wrong. There are many out there that are wonderful and fun. That’s not want I am referring to.
This controversial show Toddlers and Tiara’s is like watching a train wreck in my opinion. If we could see into the future lives of some of these kids I don’t think we would like what we see.
Some things I DO NOT agree with(oh boy, where do I start and where do I end?)
-Sugar and high caffeine drinks to keep the kids alert and active. Really? Alana, one of the little girls on the show drinks a special Go-Go Juice. Wondering what this Go-Go juice is? Well, its Mountain Dew and Red Bull!
-Some of those costumes. Another contestant “Peppermint Paisley” performed as Julia Roberts in the movie “Pretty Woman”. I am sure there were many more things you could dress your child as. Come on!
-What is being promoted. Perfection…you have to be absolutely perfect at everything. How much more pressure can these little girl handle?
-The temper tantrums and over-the-top moms that are living vigarously through those kids.
-The list can go on and on.
I think we have to sit back and just let our kids be……well, just that, kids. Stop with the make-up, costumes, pressure, and push for perfection. Dress-up play is one thing, but this show is taking it too far.
What are your thoughts on Toddlers and Tiara’s?

You are totally correct. about this show. I am surprised no child protection agency has stepped up about these pagents. What these kids have to do and the way some parents treat them is absolutly disturbing. to watch. I could never treat my daughters like that and make them do what is expected of these children. I really feel for those children. It is a very sad and upsetting show to watch.
That’s big in the USA, it’s not like you can change society.. So just do the best you can for your own daughters and don’t worry about others.
I totally agree – I cannot watch it – I only saw 10 min of one episode – where they were making a toddler get waxed…really? It should be taken off the air – how do you go about making that happen?
All of your comments are so correct. This really should be out lawed. Its no different than child pornography or child prostitution. This kind of behavior is leaving these little girls open and possible victims to all sorts of pervs. The mothers/parents should be charged for child abuse. These mothers need a long time on a psychiatrist ‘s couch. Absolutely shame on them, for robbing their children of their childhood. Also creating a barbie mentality with these girls, who will never be happy with their bodies or themselves once all the attention stops. Then comes the multiple plastic surgeries etc, etc. These girls will always be looking for perfection which they can’t have. These mothers say they are building their children self esteem. What a load of crap, that is. They are trying to find what they didn/t have in their lives. These children when they become grown up women, will never be able to be in a satisfying well adjusted relationship, no man can maintain their over inflated egos. And if by chance they do have their own children the cycle will continue, and they will abuse their children in the same way. I also blame the media, and these T.V. stations for allowing this to be produced for entertainment purpose. Does nobody have a conscience any more.
I agree these Mothers take it too far. The children are totally fake by the time they get out there. Fake teeth, fake hair, fake tans and all that make-up. Children should not be judged on their beauty or lack of it. Send the wrong message to our young girls. Accomplishments, good deads and hard work should be rewarded. However all that said, it is like watching a car crash, you just can’t look away. I find myself watching this show occationally even though I don’t agree with it.
I totally agree with Julie. This show should be banned.
The parents of these children are psychotic, and seem to be putting their kids through this train wreck to satisfy their own saggy egos. They are teaching their kids to value beauty and perfection above all else. These kids will grow up to have self-esteem issues as well as entitlement issues.
