    Visa History

It all started in the 1970s with Interac, Canada’s first debit card network launch. Interac was initially developed to allow customers to withdraw cash from their bank accounts at ATMs. Still, it wasn’t long before it evolved into a full-fledged payment system that allowed users to make purchases and pay bills electronically. This revolutionary technology laid the groundwork for what we now know as the modern credit card system.

In the 1980s, another payment solution emerged on the Canadian market—VISA. Unlike Interac, mainly used to pay bills and make deposits, VISA was designed as a credit card that allowed customers to borrow money from their banks and pay them back later with interest. This new system quickly gained traction among Canadians looking for a more convenient way to manage their finances.

By 1990, Visa had gone global, with banks in over 70 countries offering Visa cards to their customers. Over time, Visa continued to expand its offerings by introducing new features such as cash advances, balance transfers, and loyalty programs that gave customers even more ways to save money when using their cards. Today, Visa is accepted at over 25 million locations worldwide and continues to be one of the most popular payment solutions in Canada and worldwide.
