    About & History of SheaMoisture

Founded in the early 1990s by two men and a mother, Shea Moisture draws inspiration from their grandmother, who sold shea butter as early as 1912. However, in 2015, the brand found itself embroiled in controversy for featuring Asian and Caucasian babies, which did not sit well with its primarily African American customer base. The resulting backlash led Shea Moisture to retract the advertisement and swiftly apologize.

To rectify the situation in 2016, the company launched a new campaign to celebrate a broader range of ethnicities. Unfortunately, this move also sparked controversy, as it seemed to suggest that kinky and curly hair issues were exclusive to black women. Once again, Shea Moisture had to extend their apologies.

Finally, in 2017, Unilever acquired Shea Moisture, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s journey.
