Sony Corporation

As many people know, Sony Corporation, or just Sony, is a Japanese company located in  Minato, Tokyo, Japan.

In 1946, Ibuka and Morita established their first company with just 20 staff members and ¥190,000 capital. Initially, they sold electrical repair services to the Japanese military, building upon Ibuka’s experience as an engineer. Later that year, they opened a store in Ginza where their main focus was selling radios and phonographs. It wasn’t until the 1950s that the company officially changed its name to “Sony.” This change was made to make sure that people outside Japan could easily pronounce their name and remember it better.

In the late 1950s – early 1960s, Sony unveiled its first product with its brand name—the TR-55 transistor radio. This product marked the beginning of what would eventually become a multi-billion dollar industry—electronics. By the late 1960s, Sony had released Japan’s first VCR; by 1979, they had released Japan’s first compact disc player. The 1980s saw even greater success for Sony as they launched the Walkman portable cassette player, revolutionizing personal audio listening habits worldwide. During this period, Sony also developed Betamax video recording technology which helped them become a significant player in consumer electronics during this period.

Today, Sony is still an innovator in consumer electronics products such as televisions, computers, gaming systems, cameras, etc. In recent years they have also branched out into music production with their wildly popular PlayStation 4 game console and digital entertainment services such as movie streaming and downloads from their PlayStation Network Store. With over 50 years passing since its inception, it’s clear why Sony remains one of the world’s top electronic brands, producing quality products backed by cutting-edge technology with an eye on innovation for future generations.
