About Hyundai Group
Hyundai Group, was founded by Chung Ju-Yung in 1947 as a construction firm, and Chung directly controlled the company until he died in 2001.
By the mid-1990s, Hyundai comprised over 60 subsidiary companies and more than 200,000 workers.
Most companies bearing the name Hyundai are not legally connected to the Hyundai Group. Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai Department Store Group, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group and Hyundai Development Company.
Hyundai Motor America began selling cars in the USA in 1986, with a single model, the Hyundai Excel; 168,882.
Initially well-received, Hyundai sales plummeted; in response, Hyundai began investing heavily in its vehicles’ quality, design, manufacturing, and long-term research. It added a 10-year powertrain warranty to its vehicles sold in the United States. By 2004, sales had dramatically increased, and the reputation of Hyundai cars improved.
In 1989, Hyundai Auto Canada Inc. opened a stamping and assembly plant in Bromont, Quebec, employing 800 people. T
the plant cost $387.7 million, with Quebec and Canadian federal government subsidies of $131 million.
The Bromont plant was operational for four years before it closed.
Hyundai is Canada’s No.1 import car brand without a local plant.
