Danby Appliance History

It all began in 1947 when two Ontario entrepreneurs named Maurice Packman and Hyman Diamond—who had just finished serving in World War II—decided to start a business together. The pair founded what we now know as Danby Products Limited in Montreal, Quebec. Initially, their focus was on making small kitchen appliances like toasters, waffle irons, and refrigerators for homes around North America.

They continued to expand their product line throughout the 60s by manufacturing dehumidifiers for industrial use. They changed their name to “Danby Products Limited”—in honour of the town where they were located (Guelph is known as “The Royal City of Danby”).

International Expansion As demand for quality products grew outside of Canada, so did Danby’s presence in global markets.

They had opened offices in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Germany, further establishing themselves as a global leader in home appliances. Throughout this period, they continued to innovate by creating new products such as countertop dishwashers and air conditioners that revolutionized how people lived at home. Today they have offices across North America—including here in Canada—and continue to produce some of the highest-quality appliances on the market.
