Toys R Us Canada History

Toys R Us Canada first opened its doors in 1984 in Montreal. The company quickly grew to become one of the most popular toy retailers in the country, with over 80 stores across Canada. They had something for everyone—from action figures to baby dolls, from board games to construction sets. With their bright lights and a huge selection of toys, it was easy to see why children and adults alike flocked there. From its humble beginnings as a single storefront in Montreal, Toys R Us Canada became one of the largest toy sellers in North America.

However, times changed, and so did consumers’ tastes and shopping habits. In 2004, Walmart overtook them as the number one toy retailer in North America. This was partly due to Walmart’s aggressive marketing strategy targeting parents and children with discounts and promotions that Toys R Us couldn’t match. In addition, the rise of online shopping meant that customers no longer needed to visit physical stores when they could shop online from their homes. They were very close to closing their doors in 2018, but managed to carry forward.
