Cashiers are required to inspect your coupon with a fine tooth comb. They are told to from store managers. It is in their job description to inspect your coupon.
What they look for:
Expiry date is today or later. They do not take expired coupons.
Redemption Address: They look for Canadian Redemption Address.
Product matches coupon. They make sure the coupon matches the product.
Limits: They look for any limits that the coupon may state.
Example: One per Customer, Or One per transaction or One per purchase.
How to make the process faster
Use a Highlighter and highlight the hot spots.
Highlight the expiry date.
Highlight the Canada word for Redemption
Highlight the words “ANY” if it has a picture of One Product but you are using it on another.
This will speed up the process of the coupon inspection.

Highlighting – never thought of it, but it’s a terrific idea! Cheers!

I’ve only been a cashier for about 8 months but these things would seriously help.
A few things to note, some places have some extra rules that can variey from store to store (even in places like Walmart). Take where I work for example, recently we allow coupon stacking (for reasons not needed to know) even though company policy is no to. The rules for stacking here are that: 1, if the coupon outright states that it can’t be used with another coupon you can’t stack it (Krave cereal back of box for example); 2, they have to be different coupons/values (you can’t use the same $1 off coupon 20 times on one product if there are the same, printed or not), 3, once that item is free you can’t put more coupons on it (I haven’t had this happen YET); 4, Buy one get on free coupons, you can stack another $.50 coupon on the one you BOUGHT but not the FREE.
I just wanted to say this somewhere. Rules are different depending where you go and sometimes the cashier does not do his/her job. As I often hear about when costomers complain that “the last cashier put it though!”. Just because it got put though once doesn’t mean it will next time. If your coupon is rejected yet you have had it go though find out the cashier’s reasons.

As someone who has been a cashier for many years, I completely agree with your tips. The majority of cashiers you meet are held responsible for each and every coupon they take. Your tips are a great idea and would make everyone’s lives easier.
