22About Earth Day
On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. It is now recognized because the environmental movement had to convince individuals that they were affecting their environment by realizing their actions.
On Earth Day, individuals can get up close with nature and see a fresh perspective on what they can do to preserve it for just one day every year.
Pollution, littering, deforestation, strip mining, and other environmental problems were among the most pressing issues at the time of Earth Day. It has been estimated that over 79 million pounds of rubbish are left on the streets of Canada each year.
Pollution has always been a significant concern for us. Companies have dumped over 12 million gallons of raw sewage into the waterways every day.
But since that Earth Day, the world has been doing minor damage to the environment. That day, we improved mining and started taking steps to decrease pollution from cars and incinerators.
The first Earth Day was celebrated because people wanted to make a change. That led to fewer of these issues today, but they still exist.
Earth Day changes every year. But it is always about the environment. People usually do something to help, like recycling or planting trees.
