About & History of Hellmann’s Mayonnaise
You may recognize the iconic Hellman’s brand as a staple in your refrigerator and pantry. But what do you know about the company behind this beloved condiment?
Hellman’s Mayonnaise Company was founded in 1913 by Richard Hellmann, a German immigrant who opened up his delicatessen in New York City. The original recipe for the mayonnaise was created using only egg yolks, oil, lemon juice, and vinegar. It quickly became a hit among customers looking for something different from their traditional sandwich spreads.
As demand for the product grew, Hellman began selling jars of his mayonnaise to grocers around the city. In 1921, he changed its name to “Best Foods,” which would eventually become its official corporate name. In 1932, Best Foods acquired another famous mayonnaise brand, Blue Plate Mayonnaise, further bolstering its market presence. Over time, Best Foods continued to expand its product line with other condiments like ketchup, mustard, and an array of salad dressings.
In 2000, Best Foods merged with Unilever to form one of the world’s largest consumer goods companies. This merger allowed them to expand their reach into international markets while providing more resources to develop new products and recipes. Today, Hellman’s is one of Unilever’s most successful brands, with various products ranging from classic mayo to vegan-friendly options such as avocado oil-based dressings and sauces.
