About Kampgrounds of America (KOA)

Dave Drum founded KOA in 1962. At the time, he owned a small campground on the banks of the Yellowstone River near Billings, Montana. He wanted to offer travellers an affordable overnight stay across the country. Still, he quickly realized that he needed more resources and support. So, he decided to create a network of campgrounds across America that offered similar services—and thus, KOA was born!

From there, things began to take off for KOA. Drum started franchising his campgrounds and opened several new locations in states like Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. By 1967, over 200 KOA campsites were operating in North America—and within a few years after that, there were nearly 500! It was clear that people loved staying at these campgrounds because they provided a unique experience and offered amenities like hot showers and laundry facilities.

Today, KOA thrives as one of North America’s most popular camping destinations. They have over 500 locations across the United States and Canada, each offering unique features—from rustic cabins to RV sites with full hookups. What’s more, they recently launched their rewards program called KampKarma, which allows members to earn points for each stay, which can then be used towards discounts on future visits or exclusive offers from partner companies.
