    About Aunt Jemima

    Aunt Jemima is a pancake mix and syrup owned by Quaker Oats Company.

    Aunt Jemima pancake mix made its debut in 1889.

    Although not explicitly stated in the text of the advertisements, it is assumed that Aunt Jemima appearing on the box is the same woman as in the ads. The face of Aunt Jemima on the logo has undergone several changes over the years. Still, the distinctive bandana worn by her has remained a constant feature throughout each incarnation.

    Anna Short Harrington began her career as Aunt Jemima in 1935. She had to support her five kids, and she moved with her family to New York, where she cooked for a living. Quaker Oats discovered her when she was cooking at a fair. They gave her the stage name Aunt Jemima, and she became a symbol of their brand.

    Following Harrington’s death in 1955, Quaker Oats hired Nancy Green to take over the role of Aunt Jemima. She was chosen for her ability to evoke “the warm, hearty nature that we felt was right for Aunt Jemima.” She played the part until she was 86 years old.

    An ad in Woman’s Home Companion in November 1935 said, “Let ol Auntie sing in the yo’ kitchen.”Harrington continued to play the role for 14 years; Harrington died in 1955. According to J, author of The Story of Aunt Jemima, “she was famous for cooking pancakes
