A Brief History of Pringles
Pringles have been around for almost 50 years. Developed in 1967, the real Pringle chips were slow to take off and only became successful in the 1980s. It’s unclear exactly why this took off, but it is believed to have something to do with new advertising starring Brad Pitt.
There are now over 100 different flavours sold in over 140 countries. Fredric Baur, the Pringles packaging designer, was so proud of his creation that his ashes were buried in Pringle packaging.
Baur, who had a doctorate in organic chemistry, was hired by Proctor and Gamble to create the specific packaging for their chips. The company needed a package to protect the uniformity of its chip, and Baur’s experience seemed up to the challenge.
Baur invented tube-shaped packaging, and it was a success. Not only did the packaging contain more chips, it also reduced breakage during transportation and saved shipping costs.
